The Academy

Most people arrive at water treatment a little frightened and a lot confused — usually right after talking to someone whose job was to sell them something. This is the opposite of that. The Academy is where we explain what’s actually in water, how filtration actually works, and how to figure out which problem you actually have — with nothing to sell you first. If you’ve ever wondered how water filtration works, this is the place to start.

Everything here follows one simple thread: what’s in your water → how small it is → what removes it → what you buy. The filtration spectrum below is that entire idea in a single picture — every threat plotted by size, and what catches each one. And because some water trouble announces itself in a color, a smell, or a stain, its companion field guide reads those cues too. Three ways in; start with whichever fits what brought you here.

Start with size

Every contaminant has a size, and size is what decides which filter can catch it. The chart lays every common contaminant along a scale — from grit you could see on the left, down to dissolved molecules and ions on the right — and underneath, the technologies that can actually remove things of that size. Hover or tap any item to see what catches it, and, just as importantly, what lets it slip straight through.

The other half: what your water can tell you

The spectrum maps the threats you can’t detect — the ones with no color, taste, or smell. But plenty of water problems do announce themselves, in a stain, a tint, or a whiff of rotten egg. Its companion guide reads those cues, and tells you the cheap test that confirms each one.

Or let us do the legwork

The spectrum and the field guide hand you the knowledge. The configurator puts it to work: answer a few questions — what you’ve noticed, what a test turned up, or just where your water comes from — and it tells you what’s likely going on, what actually removes it, and which certifications to insist on. Still nothing to buy; just the honest criteria.

What you’ll find here

The Academy is in four parts. Start wherever your question lives.

Water Chemistry 101 — the plain-language basics: the difference between things dissolved in water, floating in it, and living in it; what pH, hardness, and TDS actually mean; and how to read a water report without a chemistry degree.

Contaminants & Dangers — a straight profile of each common contaminant: what it is, whether it’s a genuine health risk or just a nuisance, where it comes from, and exactly what removes it.

The Filtration Short Course — how each kind of filter works, organized by principle (sieving by pore size, adsorption, ion exchange, disinfection) rather than by product — so what you learn applies to anything you ever buy.

Glossary — every term we use, defined once, in human language.

The honest part

We do sell equipment — eventually, once we’re sure it’s the right equipment. But the most valuable thing on this site is free: understanding what you’re dealing with before you spend a dollar. Some of what you read here will talk you out of buying something you don’t need, or point you to a $25 test or a certified lab instead of a filter we’d profit from. That’s deliberate. A filter that fixes the wrong problem is just an expensive way to feel safe.
