Does a Water Softener Put Salt in Your Water? (And Who Should Care)
If you have a water softener, you’ve probably wondered whether it’s putting salt in your water — and whether that’s something you should worry about. The honest answer comes in two parts that usually get tangled together: what a softener actually adds, and who actually needs to care.
Salt versus sodium — the part everyone conflates
A softener runs on salt, so it’s natural to assume salt ends up in your glass. It mostly doesn’t. The salt lives in a brine tank, and it’s used to recharge the softener’s resin during its regeneration cycle — after which that brine gets flushed down the drain. It doesn’t flow to your taps.
What does end up in your water is a modest amount of sodium, and that’s a different thing from salt. A softener works by ion exchange: as hard water passes through the resin, the calcium and magnesium that make it “hard” are swapped out for sodium. So softened water carries a little more sodium than it did before — not sodium chloride you’d taste, but sodium the body registers.
Who actually needs to care about the sodium
For most people, the amount of sodium a softener adds is small and not a health concern. Where it genuinely matters is for anyone on a doctor-directed low-sodium diet — which includes many people managing high blood pressure. For them, every source of sodium counts, and softened water becomes one worth accounting for.
The rough benchmark: the EPA suggests keeping drinking-water sodium under 20 mg/L for people restricted to very low total sodium, and softened hard water can exceed that. How much sodium a softener adds depends on how hard your water was to begin with — the harder the water, the more sodium it takes to soften it, so someone with very hard water sees a bigger bump than someone with moderately hard water.
The realistic ways to deal with it
Plenty of advice tells you to “just leave the kitchen tap unsoftened.” That’s a real option, but it’s oversold — so here are the choices in the order that actually makes sense for most households, most practical first.
- Switch to potassium chloride. The simplest fix for most people. Instead of filling the brine tank with sodium chloride (softener salt), you use potassium chloride, and the softener adds potassium to your water instead of sodium — house-wide, every tap, no plumbing changes. It costs more per bag, and anyone with kidney disease should check with a doctor first, since potassium carries its own considerations. But if you want the sodium issue gone without construction, this is usually the answer.
- Add reverse osmosis at the drinking tap. An under-sink RO unit removes sodium (along with nearly everything else) from the water you actually drink and cook with. It’s a single install at one location — no whole-house re-plumbing — and it’s what a lot of softener owners end up with anyway if they also want cleaner drinking water.
- Route one unsoftened line — with an asterisk. Here’s the honest version of the popular advice. You can run a dedicated hard-water line to the kitchen cold tap, teed off the main before the softener, so that one tap delivers unsoftened water for drinking and cooking. But it only cleanly covers that one tap, it’s far easier to set up when the softener is first installed, and retrofitting it later means paying a plumber to add a tee upstream. Adding a hard line to every faucet you’d want unsoftened isn’t realistic — which is why this works for the kitchen tap and nowhere else.
- Or do nothing. If you’re not on a sodium-restricted diet, this is a genuinely fine choice. The added sodium is minor for most people, and there’s no rule that says a softener obligates you to counter it.
Worth noticing what these have in common: the practical fixes are potassium chloride or a single RO unit, not re-plumbing your house. The unsoftened-tap trick has its place, but it’s the niche option, not the default everyone should reach for.
