How You Can Buy an Arsenic Filter and Still Drink Arsenic.

A filter certified to remove arsenic. A manufacturer who disclosed exactly what it does. A buyer who read the box. And a family drinking the more toxic form of arsenic for years. Nobody lied. Here is how that happens — and how to make sure it doesn’t happen to you.


The sentence on the box

Certified to reduce arsenic.

Five words, third-party verified, backed by laboratory testing to a national standard. Not marketing fluff — this is the real thing, the certification we tell people to insist on. Our own arsenic profile says it plainly: without certification, an arsenic-removal claim is just marketing.

Now the sentence from the manufacturer’s performance data sheet, which almost nobody reads:

This system reduces pentavalent arsenic, but may not remove other forms of arsenic.

Both statements are true. Both come from the same company, about the same product. One is on the box. One is in a PDF.

And between them sits the difference between a protected household and an exposed one.

Why “arsenic” is two problems wearing one name

Arsenic shows up in water in two chemical forms. Arsenate — As(V), pentavalent — carries a negative electrical charge at normal drinking-water pH, which gives treatment systems something to grab. Arsenite — As(III), trivalent — carries no charge at all. It drifts through as a neutral molecule, and it is considerably harder to catch.

As our arsenic profile puts it: the uncharged, harder-to-remove form is also the more toxic of the two.

Here is the part that matters if your water comes from a well. In chlorinated city water, the chlorine tends to convert arsenite into the easier-to-remove arsenate automatically. In a private well — often low in oxygen — arsenic is more likely to stay in the stubborn arsenite form.

So the people most exposed to arsenic are the people most likely to have the form that filters miss.

The certification is honest. It is also narrow.

Under NSF/ANSI 53, a manufacturer can certify a filter for pentavalent arsenic reduction. That claim was implemented in 2003. A separate test protocol for trivalent arsenic reduction was not adopted until 2006.

Passing the trivalent test is genuinely difficult. The challenge water must be held below 0.5 mg/L dissolved oxygen — achieved by bubbling nitrogen gas through the tank — so that the trivalent arsenic doesn’t oxidise into the easy form before it even reaches the filter. A fresh tank has to be prepared every day of testing. It is, by the account of the standard’s own committee, among the most labour-intensive tests in any of the NSF drinking-water treatment unit standards.

Which means a manufacturer faces a choice that isn’t really a choice. Certify for pentavalent, cheaply and quickly. Or certify for both forms, at considerable expense, to protect a subset of customers who mostly don’t know the distinction exists.

Most certify for pentavalent. And then they say so.

Nobody is hiding this

We went looking for the villain in this story and could not find one.

Aquasana’s performance data sheet states that its system reduces pentavalent arsenic but may not remove other forms. Kinetico states that its K5 station is certified for pentavalent arsenic, and that trivalent arsenic must be oxidised before entering its whole-house Arsenic Guard. Layne RT tells buyers, in writing, to have an arsenic test performed after installation to verify the system is actually working.

That is not deception. That is competent, careful technical communication.

The box says arsenic.

The pattern, once you see it

This is not an arsenic problem. It is a certification-reading problem, and arsenic is simply where the stakes are highest.

Consider lead. From our lead profile: an ordinary pitcher or fridge filter won’t touch lead unless it is specifically certified for it. Not “carbon filters remove lead.” Not “our filter reduces heavy metals.” Certified for lead, with lead named on the certification. The qualifier is the entire claim.

The grammar is always the same. A true, specific, verifiable statement — followed by a reader who completes it generously.

  • Certified for arsenic  →  certified for one form of arsenic
  • Reduces heavy metals  →  reduces these listed heavy metals
  • NSF certified  →  certified to some standard, for some claims — possibly only that the plastic is safe

That last one deserves its own warning. NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic effects: chlorine taste, odour. NSF/ANSI 53 covers health effects. A filter can be legitimately “NSF certified” while making no health claim whatsoever.

How to read one, in ninety seconds

You are looking for four things, in this order.

1. Which standard? Health claims live in NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) and 58 (reverse osmosis). If the certification is only to 42, it is a taste-and-odour claim. That is fine, and it is not protection.

2. Which contaminant, named? Not “heavy metals.” Not “contaminants.” The specific substance, on the certification, by name.

3. Which form, if the contaminant has forms? For arsenic, this is the whole game. Does the certification say pentavalent? Does it say both forms? If it doesn’t say, assume pentavalent.

4. Where is the listing? Not the box. Not the Amazon page. The certifier publishes the listing — the actual document naming the product and every claim it passed. If a manufacturer will not point you to it, that is your answer.

What a well owner should actually do

Our arsenic profile gives the honest resolution, and it is worth repeating here: you either need your lab to report the arsenic species, or you need a system rated to handle both forms.

Two real paths. Neither is expensive relative to what’s at stake.

A speciated arsenic test costs more than a standard panel and tells you exactly which problem you have. Or skip the question entirely and buy a system certified for both forms — or one that pairs an oxidation step with the treatment, converting arsenite to arsenate before it reaches the media. Manufacturers who sell this specify it. Kinetico’s whole-house guidance says trivalent arsenic must be oxidised prior to entering the system. That is a company telling you the truth about the limits of its own product.

And afterwards: test the treated water. Not the raw water. The water coming out of the filter you just bought. Layne RT recommends it in their own literature, which is more honest than most of the internet.


The uncomfortable part

We sell water treatment equipment. It would be easy, and profitable, to tell you the industry is lying to you and that we alone are honest.

The industry, as far as we can tell, is not lying about this. The certifications say what they cover. The data sheets disclose the limits. The standard’s own test protocol for trivalent arsenic is public, and it is genuinely hard, and that difficulty is the reason the gap exists.

What the industry is doing is putting the true thing in the place nobody looks, and the simple thing on the box. That is not fraud. It is just how products get sold — and it is entirely sufficient to leave a family on a well drinking the more toxic form of arsenic through a filter that was, technically, certified to remove it.

The fix is not outrage. The fix is reading the listing.
